Switch off and protect our planet emlyn dole

The Leader of Carmarthenshire County Council is urging people to switch off their lights as part of Earth Hour day.

Cllr Emlyn Dole is once again backing WWF Cymru’s one hour lights out on Saturday, March 24 at 8.30-9.30pm.

The worldwide initiative, now in its 11th year, is the world’s largest demonstration of support for action on climate change. Each year, millions of people around the world come together not only to save electricity but also to bring people together to celebrate the planet and how we need to protect it.

Carmarthenshire County Council is committed to reducing its environmental footprint – something which is reflected in reductions in energy consumption, increased recycling rates, investment in renewable energy and deployment of electric vehicles.

Last year over 280,000 people in Wales switched off including all local authorities and 300 Welsh schools.

Iconic landmarks switched off for the hour, including the Senedd, Principality Stadium, Caernarfon Castle, National Library of Wales and National Waterfront Museum. Companies showed their support for the campaign too, including Ikea Cardiff, Admiral, St David’s Shopping Centre, John Lewis, Arriva Trains Wales and Howies.

Cllr Emlyn Dole: “Carmarthenshire County Council is pleased to support Earth Hour once again. We have supported this campaign over recent years in Carmarthenshire and will be making arrangements to ensure all unnecessary building lighting is switched off from 8.30pm-9.30pm on March 25.

“By taking action and making simple changes to reduce our carbon footprint we can all make a huge difference to help protect our planet for future generations.”

Research shows our reliance on high carbon fossil fuel like coal, oil and gas is over-heating the atmosphere and affecting the climate.
