Youngsters across Carmarthenshire have been praised for their work in inspiring others to take part in sport.
A celebration has taken place to honour Bronze Ambassadors who encourage other children in their primary schools to take part in sport and physical activity.
This includes running break time clubs, speaking in school assemblies and to school governors, inviting local clubs into school as well as helping promote new and existing sport clubs, updating school sport notice boards and websites.
Carmarthenshire County Council’s Actif Sport & Leisure Team co-ordinates the initiative across the county, with Bronze Young Ambassadors in years five and six, ‘Bronze Plus’ in years seven and eight, Silver in years nine – 11, Gold in years 11-13 and Platinum in sixth form and higher education.
This year, a record total of 233 young people were trained to become Bronze Ambassadors. They were recognised for their efforts at an event held in Neuadd y Gwendraeth, which was led by a team of Gold Ambassadors.
Leisure executive board member Cllr Peter Hughes Griffiths said: “The Young Ambassadors scheme is continuously growing year after year in Carmarthenshire.
“Ambassadors are great role models who inspire fellow pupils to take part in physical activity. Their aim is to get more children, more active, more often.
“Young Ambassadors run extra-curricular clubs where they teach basic fundamental skills and activity games to help develop and improve a child’s confidence, physical skills and motivate them to keep active and to have fun and enjoy.
“Once participants have these basic skills, the Ambassadors run sport specific sessions, and also promote community clubs to help children become hooked on sport and continue being active through life long participation.
“They help to improve the health and well-being of children by providing opportunities to keep active.
“Ambassadors know that by exercising, it not only improves children physically but emotionally and socially too.”
Actif Sport & Leisure Officers train and help mentor all Young Ambassadors in Carmarthenshire and also hold regular steering group meetings with the Platinum and Gold Young Ambassadors.
Across the county, there are 233 BYAs across 80 schools; 40 BYA+ in the first year it has been run; 36 Silver: six Gold; and one Platinum.
