A Llanelli woman has to pay nearly £400 for dumping her cigarette butt on railings.
Daisy Marie Beck, of Maes Yr Haf in Pwll, was ordered to pay the fee by Llanelli magistrates after she was caught red handed committing the offence by council enforcement officers.
In a prosecution brought by Carmarthenshire Council, the court was told that the 22-year-old was spotted smoking at Llanelli Bus Station in East Gate on September of last year by patrolling officers. Beck was spotted placing the butt on pedestrian guard railings before walking away towards the Spar Shop.
Officers approached her and issued a fixed penalty notice. Despite reminders no payment was made and the case was then taken to court.
It is an offence to litter and failure to pay could lead to prosecution in the magistrates court where the maximum fine is £2,500.
Beck admitted the offence by post and was fined £120. She must also pay £340.04 costs and £30 victim surcharge.
The councils’ executive board member for public protection, Cllr Philip Hughes said: “A simple act which has proved very costly for this woman could have been avoided if she had placed her butt in the bins provided. There are no excuses for littering and anyone who is caught by our officers committing an offence will be held accountable. Littering blights the landscape and costs the council a lot of money which could be better spent on our front line services.”
