Carmarthenshire County Council’s Housing Options Team Council in running for national award housingteam

Carmarthenshire County Council has been shortlisted for a national award for its approach in tackling homelessness.
The local authority has been announced as a finalist in the UK Housing Awards 2018.
Last year Carmarthenshire County Council’s Housing Options Team provided advice to 3,229 households, directly preventing 1,277 households from becoming homeless.
The awards, run by the Chartered Institute of Housing and Inside Housing, showcase the very best the housing sector has to offer.
Prior to a recent review of the service more than 500 households were determined as statutorily homeless compared to 135 last year.
To tackle the issue, the team brought together a number of external partners to look at the challenge of preventing homelessness from a customer’s point of view.
Alongside working with Care and Repair, Shelter, Pobl and The Walich, the council has also improved relationships with private landlords by developing its own lettings agency, Gosod Syml – Simple Lettings.
They have also created a ‘hub’ of specialist advisors and partners, including housing advisors who undertake in-depth advice and support to prevent homelessness or find alternative accommodation; occupational therapists who support re-housing disabled people and those with serious health issues; private sector support officers and environmental health officers to support tenants and landlords in the private rented sector; and home improvement officers to support keeping people in their own home.
Cllr Linda Davies Evans, executive board member responsible for housing, said: “It’s encouraging that our housing team’s forward-thinking approach has been recognised nationally and I would like to wish them all the best of luck in the awards ceremony. The work they are doing is already making a significant difference in the county in improving lives of those in the county.”
The awards take place in London on May 2.
