Action group set up to help people with dementia dependent 441408 340

Residents in Laugharne, St Clears and Whitland are being encouraged to become a Dementia Friend and help those living with the condition in their communities.

Whether it’s helping someone find the right bus or spreading the word about dementia on social media or within the community a dementia friend can make a big difference.

Carmarthenshire County Council, Hywel Dda Health Board and Dyfed Powys Police together with local GP surgeries and voluntary groups are working together to support the Alzheimer Society’s Dementia Friends initiative with the ultimate aim to register the above area with the society as dementia friendly communities.

To become a dementia friend you’ll need to attend a one hour dementia awareness session.

Town and community councils, local groups as well as businesses are also being invited.  All attendees will receive a Dementia Friend badge and councils and businesses a certificate to display to demonstrate their commitment to supporting people with dementia.

The council’s executive board member for social care and dementia care champion said: “A Dementia Friend is someone who is committed to making the lives of people living in their community with dementia a little bit better.  Anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend and every action counts no matter how small.

We will be organising for a trained Dementia Friends Champion to provide awareness sessions in our communities.  They are trained volunteers who encourage families, friends, colleagues and local communities to understand more about dementia, ensuring that we always remember to see the person and not the dementia.”
